A new chapter for Tbilisi Zoo is approaching. Director Zurab Gurielidze has confirmed that the new zoo, located near Tbilisi Sea, is expected to open in the first half of July.

Speaking on Sakmiani Dila, Gurielidze noted that final infrastructure works are currently in progress, including landscaping and site preparation.

The new space is designed with significantly larger enclosures and updated exhibition formats. Its first phase will introduce a Caucasus-themed exposition, combining public display with conservation efforts focused on protecting and restoring endangered regional species.

Gurielidze explained that the project serves a dual purpose: not only to present wildlife to visitors, but also to function as an active conservation environment, reflecting the evolving role of modern zoos.

New Tbilisi Zoo construction near Tbilisi Sea landscape

The development is supported by the Tbilisi City Hall and financed through the current year’s budget.

Looking ahead, the zoo plans to expand further. An African exposition is already in development, with funding secured. Additional enclosures are expected to be completed by the end of the year or early next year, making it possible to introduce animals such as giraffes.

Ticket pricing has not yet been finalized and will be set in coordination with relevant authorities. Meanwhile, the existing zoo will remain open, continuing to host different species and exhibitions.

The decision to relocate the zoo to the Tbilisi Sea area followed the devastating Tbilisi flood of June 13, 2015. The new complex spans 48 hectares and represents an investment of approximately 50 million USD, marking one of the most significant cultural and environmental projects in the city.
